A good area rug is closer to a textile heirloom than to wall-to-wall carpet — and it needs to be cleaned like one. A rug that “looks fine” can be holding a startling amount of fine grit down at the base of the pile, quietly sawing at the fibers every time someone walks across it.
Why the rental machine isn’t the answer
Supermarket carpet shampooers are built for synthetic broadloom. On wool and natural-fiber rugs they leave detergent residue that attracts dirt faster, can shrink or ripple the backing, and can make dyes bleed. Fringe, in particular, almost never survives them looking right.
What proper rug cleaning involves
- Dusting first: the dry soil comes out before anything gets wet — this step alone removes what years of vacuuming couldn’t.
- Dye testing: every rug is tested so reds don’t wander into ivories.
- Washing matched to the rug: fiber, construction, and condition decide the method.
- Controlled drying: flat and thorough, so there’s no mildew and no distortion.
- Fringe finishing: cleaned and combed — the detail everyone notices.
When to bring a rug in
Every couple of years for most rooms, sooner for entryways, dining rooms, and anywhere with pets — and promptly after any spill that soaks through. Roll it up and bring it to any of our locations, or ask about pickup for larger pieces.
