Most people hand their clothes across our counter without ever wondering what happens next — which is fine by us, because the whole point is that you don’t have to think about it. But “dry cleaning” is one of the more misunderstood names in any industry (for starters, nothing about it is dry), so here’s what actually happens to your garments between drop-off and pickup at our Mobile store.
First: what “dry” really means
Dry cleaning isn’t waterless magic — it’s cleaning with a liquid solvent instead of water. Water is hard on certain fibers: it swells them, shrinks them, and pulls dyes loose. Solvent does none of that, which is why wool suits, silk blouses, structured jackets, and anything with interfacing or beading come through dry cleaning looking like themselves instead of a smaller, sadder version.
What happens to your clothes, step by step
- Inspection and tagging. Every garment gets looked over and tagged so it never loses its way — that’s how thousands of pieces a week each find their way home. We check pockets, note existing damage, and flag stains.
- Stain pre-treatment. Spots get treated individually before cleaning, with different chemistry for oil-based stains (grease, makeup, salad dressing) than for water-based ones (coffee, wine). This is the step where telling us what the stain is really pays off.
- The clean itself. Garments tumble gently in solvent that dissolves oils and lifts away soil that water can’t touch. No water ever touches the fabric — that’s the “dry.”
- Pressing and finishing. Every piece is professionally pressed — collars shaped, creases where they belong and nowhere else. Honestly, half of what people love about dry cleaning is the finishing.
- Final inspection and bagging. A last look, loose buttons noted (our on-site alterations can fix them while it’s here), then bagged for the ride home.
What dry cleaning does that your washer can’t
Body oils, grease, and anything oil-based dissolve in solvent but mostly laugh at detergent and water. Structure survives: shoulders keep their shape, pleats stay put, linings don’t pucker. And delicate trims — beading, sequins, some buttons — that a washing machine would grind away are handled and protected.
So what should you actually dry clean?
Suits, blazers, and anything tailored. Silk, rayon, and most wool. Dresses you care about, and anything labeled “dry clean only” — that label usually means the dye, trim, or inner structure won’t survive water. Everyday cottons and knits are what our wash-dry-fold service is for; there’s no sense paying dry cleaning prices for gym shirts.
